Canon Upgrades 580EX Flash
The new Speedlite 580EX II Flash offers sturdier contruction; non-TTL automatic flash exposure control; and faster, silent recycling.

Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash
Canon has replaced its 580EX flash unit with the new Speedlite 580EX II. The new unit is more durable than its predecessor, with a metal hotshoe mount and gasketing for dust and moisture resistance. It also incorporates an external metering sensor for non-TTL automatic flash exposure and a PC socket for hooking up non-dedicated slave triggers. Photographers using the 580EX II with any equipment will be pleased that, according to Canon, it recycles 20 percent faster than the older flash -- and silently.

The 580EX II has a guide number of 190 (feet) at ISO 100 and swivels 180 degrees in either direction. It's fully compatible with all EOS SLRs, and its AF-assist beam is compatible with all AiAF points on EOS SLRs. Mark III shooters will be able to control flash functions from the camera menu.

The 580EX II will be available in April 2007 at a price that has not yet been announced.

From the Canon EOS 1D Mark III Press Release:

The popular Speedlite 580EX Flash is being replaced by the new Speedlite 580EX II Flash, which features a host of improvements, including a metal hot shoe with an improved locking mechanism for added durability, an external metering sensor for non-TTL automatic flash exposure control and a PC socket for use with non-dedicated slave triggers. Fully compatible with all EOS SLRs, the new Speedlite 580EX II is gasketed for dust and moisture resistance, making it possible for users of EOS-1 class digital SLRs and many L-series EF lenses to use flash safely when shooting in dusty or wet environments.
