Thaipusam, a day of consecration to the Hindu deity, Lord Murugan, sometimes also called Lord Subramaniam. Hindus in Singapore and neighbouring Malaysia mark the festival with various rituals of penance and thanksgiving, including shaving their hair and piercing various parts of their bodies with metal stakes and skewers. Thaipusam is observed on the full moon day of the Tamil month Thai (Jan-Feb). I took this near Singapore's Sri Thendayuthapani Temple on Feb 5, 2004.
