Hello!

I need some advise on modifying canon camera, I am thinking of getting a old canon d60 for modifying. What is a good IR filter to be placed into the body?
I have a hoya ir 72.
Havnt found anyone in singapore who does modifying yet, so i need all the advise you can give!

i got my d30 modified by harlim...
he's not using R72 filter... but using some kind of special glass...

well we have a guy who willing to do this kind of modification in Jakarta. wellington had his camera modified by him. His name is MR. Harlim the camera modificator!!! the cost is variable depending on what type of ir you want... in case of wellington's ir it cost him around S$470... for examples of pics just look it up at welling's gallery...

My advice to you is contact wellington (he is in singapore) and squeeze all ir information out of his brain .... he is a nice guy and SINGLE too !!!

May, when you visit Indonesia bring your camera body along. Drop it in Jakarta and let Harlim do the IR modification for you. Otherwise, I'm sure Harlim read this topic, and he shall give you a message when next time he visits Singapore.

Wellington, am looking for a old d60 so i can modify my camera. How is it compared to d30, or is it 30d you modified?
Do you know if Harlim is using the watten IR filter instead of Hoya?

May, he have a great special glass combination for IR so dont question too many lah... just send him and make a great IR photography in Sing...:P

I'm an inqusitive photographer, gotta ask as many questions to quench my thirst for great photography.

Different IR filters have inherent qualities, some like watten have a dull tint red, hoya has a brownish gray tint, it really affects the way i shoot.

I am a traditionalist,I dont want to spend so much time on post processing and i like the gray tint!!!

1. I dont use any IR filter which sold in the market (Kodak / Hoya /B+W /Heliopan /Cokin etc) anymore, the reason is bubble problem. ( see picture no1/2/3 ) to understand about bubble.
Event b+w/heliopan/tiffen their claim using schott glass on their filter but we must know schott have 3 class for bubble quality (A/B/C) and the glass quality with ring mounted just B/C class and some brand just D class.

To modify any brand of camera digital to be dedicated IR Camdig have few issue/problem. The issue/problem are AF,lens,Dust,bubble,post pro, difraction index etc

- AF and Lens not big deal for me
- Dust , just small problem for any modificator , dust will visible when composition/angle to sky , we can solve it with clone/spot healing
- Bubble , Is big problem will visible anytime and anywhere sometime like big black dot and sometime like big transparent dot, very dificult to solve it with clone/spot healing in post pro.
- Difraction index every kind of filter glass/lens/spectrum have different difraction index, that is modificator job to find where difraction index , difraction index not because glass thickness affect but the glass material bk7/quartz/window/flourite/sapphire/zinc selenide etc .
I will call them big liar seller/modificator if they just promote their IR filter focus problem solve because they sold glass thickness same as hot mirror any brand
For Camdig Difraction Index problem that can because filter on the Censor (Hot mirror/IR filter/Material of the glass), Flange back (Af censor/Prism/Image censor distance) , Lens(Matarial of the glass/Diafragma blade/focus system/inner/front/rear) , and spectrum (UV/IR/VIS) , reflection from the object (Human/Animal/flower) , light characteristic/situation (Indoor/flashing/tungsten/sunrise/sunny/sunset)
Difraction is most difficult problem to solve , i seperate tobe 3 way to solve it :
No.1 Simple way : Be a liar
No.2. Lazy way : Just use extreme wide angle lens and shot with small aperture or use IR lens (expensive).
No.3 Terrible way : find difraction index (glass/flange back/lens/reflection form the object/light characteristic) and make average of index to reposition the af censor . (see the picture no 5 about difraction)

2. Misleading to understood about IR tint , whatever brand and kind IR filter in fact always come with 3 tone image (Black , Red tint , white).
which we often see IR image with Brownish, Grey, blueish etc just because interpolation in camera process or post process that can be come from Wb Interpolation.

3. Simply post process that must to change Black/red/white to be something we like (greyscale/monochrome, coloring etc)

4. D30/D60/10D which the model i not recommened to modify be Pure IR camdig but for Mixed spectrum (UV+IR , Version 5) that still ok . Because that 3 model using black tunnel design . (see picture no 4)

@ Ling2 : Makanya ada pesan no more D30 , kenapa harus nangis yg penting kan sudah beres dan itu satu2nya D30 yg gua mau bongkar utk v3 :D , no more karena utk ukur filter biar bisa sejajar dgn sensor butuh waktu yg sangat lama sebab tunnelnya terbuat dari karet.
Sedikit tekanan saja tunnel tersebut akan miring. Lain halnya jika gunakan v5 masih ada spectrum lain yg bantu mau miring gimana pun tetap tidak ada masalah.

sampe 350dnya suka cemburu bobo di rumah terus...
eh iya oom... saya udah coba d30 saya pake beberapa lensa laen selain yang diset sama oom ( 15 50 135 )...

tamron 11-18 - ngak focus dan tone jadi kuning...
canon 35 f/2 - focus ok, tone normal
canon 17-40 f/4L - focus ok, tone sedikit menguning...
canon 16-35 f/2.8L - focus ok dan tone normal...
canon 20-35 f/2.8L - focus ok dan tone normal...
tokina 12-24 f/4 - focus miss tapi tone normal...
sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 - ngak focus dan tone melest...
canon 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 - ngak bisa masuk di mountnya kekeekk...
canon 85 f/1.8 - focus ok dan tone normal...

ntar kalo saya lage tebel muka saya icip2 lage de di tokonya orang ok ok? heheheheeee...

No 5 , Difraction after the lens

No .1 = Standart glass lens , where difraction also happen on visible light , so sometime we can see big purple/red/blue/green fringing on the edge
No .2 = High Grade lens ( Glass cutting/molded and coating )
No. 3 = High Grade lens (Material of the glass, cutting/molded/ coating)

After you read all you will understant filter quality not talking about tone/tint , but the bubble problem and other Big issue/problem is focus
